Mothers in Children's and Young Adult Literature: From the Eighteenth Century to Postfeminism

mothers.jpg

This book features 13 essays by children's and young adult literature scholars, all focused on various ways of thinking about the portrayals of mothers in youth literature.

The introduction gives a more general overview of the existing scholarship on mothering. Lisa Rowe Fraustino was the driving force behind this co-edited collection, which won the ChLA Edited Book Award!

This book is available in hardcover and paperback from the University Press of Mississippi website as well as online bookshops.

Handbook of Research on Children's and Young Adult Literature

This book is HUGE. It's one of the very few books that speaks to the interdisciplinary contexts in which scholars study children's and young adult literature--Education, English, and Library and Information Sciences, with some articles by philosophers, publishers, and translators, and short "points of departure" by authors, illustrators, and poets. It was co-edited by Shelby A. Wolf (how we miss her!), Patricia Enciso, Christine A. Jenkins, and me.

The Gothic in Children's Literature: Haunting the Borders

I co-edited this book with Anna Jackson and Rod McGillis, so we brought together insights from New Zealand, Canada, and the US, and the essays reflect that geographical range as well as some good history of the Gothic in children's literature as well as reflections on contemporary texts.
